A quick overview of the tournament format and rules.

Qualifying format will be group match play. Groups will be either 3 or 4 player groups depending on the number of entries.
Qualifying will run for a guaranteed minimum of 7 rounds. However, if we are able to get more rounds in within the allotted 4 hour window, we will do so. A new round will not begin after 4:45pm, unless we haven't reached the minimum 7 rounds.
Scoring during qualifying will be 7 points for 1st, 5 points for 2nd, 3 points for 3rd, 1 point for 4th
At the end of qualifying ALL players will advanced to the finals in one of 3 divisions.
The top 8 will advance to the "A" division and the format will be a modified PAPA style format. Top 2 from each group will advance to the "A" finals. (The modified portion is explained below in detail).
Places 9 through 16 will advance to the "B" division and the format will be a modified PAPA style format. Top 2 from each group will advance to the "B" finals. (The modified portion is explained below in detail).
All other players will advance to the "C" division finals, which will be a head to head 2 strike format to determine 1st and 2nd place. NOTE - Once qualifying ends, that will determine your ranking that will be submitted to IFPA. For example, if you finish 31st after qualifying, that is what will be submitted to IFPA. If you were to go on and win the knockout format, this will not change your ranking for the overall tournament.
For "A" and "B" division, ALL PLACES are played out to determine finishing order for IFPA purposes. For example, if you end up in 3rd place after qualifying, and get knocked out of Round 1, you will continue to play until positions 5 through 8th are determined. If you choose NOT to play out your position, you will be awarded the lowest spot for that bracket/division. Also, for "A" division we do pay out 5th place, so there is more incentive to stay and play
Tiebreakers for qualifying - Pinburgh changed their tiebreakers this year and First State Flippers has changed as well. Once qualifying ends, positions 1-16 will be determined by the Match Play software. The tiebreaker setting is based off of the strengths of opponents faced. Basically, the better you play, the better your opponents will be in your tiebreaker results. In the event we have IDENTICAL tiebreaker scores, we will only conduct a one game playoff if the position is considered a significant position. We consider the following positions to be significant: 1st, 2nd, 8th, 9th, 10th, and 16th.
Stuck Balls - call for a TD to free a stuck ball. Ball will be placed on the left or right flipper or the shooter lane at the discretion of the TD
Starting games with correct number of players - If a game is started without the correct number of players, the game will be completely voided and restarted with the correct number of players added
Playing out of turn - This results in a DQ
Extra balls - Most EB's will be off. Any earned EB's will be plunged, not played
Stuck balls during MB - First State Flippers uses the FSPA ruling for this, play on. We do not consider this to be exceptionally beneficial
Prizes: "A" division will pay out 1st through 5th place. "B" division will pay out 1st and 2nd only. "C" division will pay out 1st only.
Modified PAPA "A" and "B" finals - Banks will be pre-selected before the tournament begins and will be subject to change should a machine go down at some point during the day. Each bank will consist of 4 games, however you will only play 3 of the 4 games. The 4th game will be used as a tiebreaker game if one is needed. At the start of a round in both "A" and "B" divisions, the groups in that round will get to choose either bank, game(if known), or position. Starting with group #1 in the "A" division, the highest seed in that group can either choose the bank, OR choose position for unknown game #1, OR defer to the next highest seed. From there we will continue down the list based on the next highest seed until we have a bank, a game, and all positions filled. At the end of game #1, the top seeded player gets to choose either next game OR choose order .
PAPA Finals scoring will be 4, 2, 1, 0
